Programm in letzter Minute

Introduction: Testing the quality of a piano
The musical program:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Sonata KV333 in B-flat-Major
This sonata with its singing character shows some stylish similarities with the pieces of Johann Christian Bach, a much older friend of Mozart. Its composition is dated 1783, but it is also possible that it was already composed five years earlier. The final movement imitates a piano concerto with “tutti” and “solo” instrument. The sonata is one of Hans’ favorite Mozart-sonatas,although until recently it was not known to him that the sonata is called “Linzer Sonate” after the city were the pianist has been born and the sonata was written.
Ludwig van Beethoven
Sonata opus 2/1 in F-minor
Beethoven has written 32 sonatas, from opus 2 till opus 111. Joachim Kaiser one has remarked that there are not any two sonatas that could resemble each other. They are all different, Beethoven could not endure the idea of repeating his compositions. One could mean that the first sonata would be a simple one as the first three sonatas are dedicated to Joseph Haydn, the most adored composer of that time, whom Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert would call “Papa”. The sonata however does not appear to smoothly fit in in the row of many sonatas written by Haydn and Mozart. Beethoven starts with rebellion, fight and enormous drive. He seems to say “Here I come, listen to what I have to tell you.” While the pianist is currently working on sonatas that have been written at a later time the challenge of this sonata remains unaltered. 50 years ago the sonata was played by the pianist for the first time. It was a big challenge then and it still is one today.
Franz Schubert
Sonata DV 664 in A-Major
If one would ask for the pianists’ favorite composer the answer might be Franz Schubert. But the favorite sonatas would be DV958, DV 959, DV 960, not especially DV 664. However there exists a reason to select exactly this sonata. While Franz Schubert is considered to be a romantic composer this sonata brings us back to the playfulness of a Mozart sonata, thus rather retaining a classical style. Supposedly it has been written in 1819, meaning that Schubert has composed it at the age of 22. He dedicated the Sonata to Josephine von Koller who lived in Steyr and was considered “very pretty” and “talented” by Franz. Incidentally Steyr is the Austrian city where the mother of the pianist was born. The sonata was on one of the first long playing records (33 r.p.m.) the pianist was listening to when he was six years old. Svatoslav Richter performed the “Wanderer fantasy” on side A and Sonata KV 644 on side B. Imagine walking on a very nice sunny day in spring time.
Hans Hartmann
begun to play piano at the age of 5. During his high school years he was educated by Anton Hueber, a composer and scientist who later became a professor at the Vienna Academy of Music. He would have liked to have Hans pursuing a musical career but engineering and electronics were of greater interest. Actually Hans decided against a career as a musician at the age of eleven, because of his great frustration that he could not produce the sound that he was used to when listening to famous pianist. His career as a developer, inventor, sales man, teacher and business man was interrupted in 1988, when for six years he was the export manager for Bösendorfer pianos. Bösendorfer was considered the top instrument known for its special sound that would show in chamber music and especially in accompanying voice. Never stopping to play Hans prefers to do chamber music and plans to play all 32 Beethoven sonatas once he is in retirement.
